Dr. Osterberg Featured on KXAN NBC News for Prostate Cancer
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. In effort to promote prostate cancer screening, I sat down with Tom Miller to discuss more.
Prostate cancer affects 1/9 men and approximately 1/40 men die of prostate cancer each year. When caught early, prostate cancer is very curable.
We typically recommend screening starting at the age of 55 however if you have a family history, this may be sooner.
Screening is performed with a digital rectal examination and a blood test called a "PSA."
If either are abnormal, you may be referred to a Urologist to discuss more.
The only way to diagnose prostate cancer is by biopsy.
If cancer is found, there are many treatment options which include
1) Surveying the cancer to ensure it does not become more agressive
2) Surgery
3) Radiation
